I read Psalm 81 this morning and found a really awesome
glimpse of God’s concern for His people. Check out verses 6-16 (New Living
"Now I will relieve your shoulder of its burden;
I will free your hands from their heavy tasks.
You cried to me in trouble, and I saved you;
I answered out of the thundercloud.
I tested your faith at Meribah,
when you complained that there was no water.
Listen to me, O my people, while I give you stern warnings.
O Israel, if you would only listen!
You must never have a foreign god;
you must not bow down
before a false god.
For it was I, the LORD your God,
who rescued you from the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.
But no, my people wouldn’t listen.
did not want me around.
So I let them follow their blind and stubborn way,
living according to their own desires.
But oh, that my people would listen to me!
Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths!
How quickly I would then subdue their enemies!
How soon my hands would be upon their foes!
Those who hate the LORD would cringe before him;
their desolation would last forever.
But I would feed you with the best of foods.
I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock."
Here are some of the things that really made an impression
- "I will
relieve your shoulder of its burden; I will free your hands from their heavy
tasks." God does not say "I will relieve your burden," or
"I will take away your heavy tasks." The New King James Version makes
this even more clear, as it says "I removed his shoulder from the burden;
His hands were freed from the baskets." The burden may very well remain, and the heavy tasks may not be going
anywhere. BUT… God will step in and provide you relief. He will relieve your
shoulder by inserting His. It reminds me of a Gaither Vocal Band song that says
"Your load will be much lighter, when Jesus lifts your heavy load."
your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things." Isn’t that
awesome?! But, notice that we have to take action first: "Open your
mouth… WIDE!" God has many good things in store for each of us, but we
will never experience them until we open our mouths, and open them wide. We all
want good things, but sometimes we forget — or refuse — to open our mouths.
Open your mouth wide and receive what God has to offer!
- "So I
let them follow their blind and stubborn way, living according to their own
desires." That’s what happens when we don’t open our mouths, or when we
don’t listen to God and obey His calling, and His commands. He will not
force-feed us. If we are stubborn and only want to do things our way, God will
let us. But even then, He is crying out, "But oh, that my people would
listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths! But I would feed you with the best of
foods. I would satisfy you with wild honey from the rock." If you’ve had
your back turned on God, I encourage you, pause, and hear His voice… He wants
desperately to feed you and satisfy you, in a way that only He can.
Praise the Lord! He is worthy of our praise! "Sing
aloud to God our strength." (Psalm 81:1, New King James Version)
